NeuroGraduate Summer School in Cognitive Neuroscience

On July 1–5, Romain Ligneul and Daniela Domingue organized the NeuroGraduate Summer School in Cognitive Neuroscience. It was an energetic fusion of neuroscience and technology through lectures and practical exercises at the neurocampus of University Claude Bernard, Lyon.

Over the course of the week, students were immersed in the foundations of cognitive modeling, learning how to preprocess data, fit behavioural models, and work with Bayesian and reinforcement learning frameworks. Midweek the focus shifted toward real-world applications—linking brain and body signals to behaviour, and exploring how technologies like mobile sensing, VR, and even smartphone games are reshaping how we study the brain. You can find the full program here.

On Thursday evening we introduced the students to EEG in brain-computer interfaces, as walked them through our performance Steady State. We transformed brainwaves into sound and lights in real time, showin how brain-computer interfaces can become instruments of creativity. The audience wasn’t just watching data—they were feeling it, hearing it, seeing it unfold around them.

The workshop seemed to connect well with the spirit of exploration, thinking and creativity that the students enbodied. We hope that with some hands-on experimentation (including hardware issues) we showed just how alive neuroscience can be when it’s plugged in, turned up, and shared.

Thank you Romain and Daniella for organizing this excellent event, and for inviting us to share in the experience! Special thanks to Fred for supporting us with the sound installation.
